Make copies of tax returns for the past 3 years

Acquire a copy of all statements and bills for the past 6 months
Such as:
- Bank statements
- Credit card statements
- Utility bills
- Mortgage statements
- Rental receipts (if applicable)

When finding an attorney, ask about their method of billing before discussing any information.
If a lawyer says they offer a free consultation for a set amount of time, be sure to watch the clock to make sure you do not exceed your allotted time by even a minute. They often bill in 10 minute increments even if less
than that amount of time is used.

Keep a copy of important numbers stored in a safe place
Important numbers may include:
- Social security numbers
- Passwords
- Membership numbers
- Phone numbers
- Account numbers
- Combinations

Speak honestly to your children.
Talk to children on their level and do not use name-calling when referring to your ex-spouse. The children need to know that they are not at fault; they are loved by both parents and will be taken care of.
Answer their questions honestly. Do not be afraid to share with the children about your finances if you are unable to provide the same standard of living.

If you are going through a divorce, this is likely the most stressful event you will ever have to experience. Most people need some form of divorce support. It is important to take care of yourself during this time. That
means, eating healthy, exercise, talk to people who care about your, and seek professional help if needed.

Limit the need for legal help
Divorce lawyers are extremely expensive and not always helpful. Any time you contact a lawyer or they receive correspondence related to your case, they may decide to bill you. Be aware! Only use legal help if absolutely
necessary. It is the experience of those who have contributed to this Divorce Support checklist; divorce is rarely fair or just even when large sums of money are paid for legal help.
